Favourite singles/tracks

Favourite single goes to original theme from Doctor Who by Ron Grainer and the BBC Radiphonic Workshop - yes it was a single, I have it on 7" vinyl. Why? Looking back my earliest memories of music are light orchestral played on the old BBC Light programme and Frank Sinatra, when my father brought home a wind-up gramophone and some 78's but what really caught my attention was "Telstar" by the Tornados. At just 6 or seven year's old I was hooked on electronic music. You could say the Doctor Who theme was the indie music of its day.

My favourite track from an album is sort of a combination of the two, it's Pink Floyd's "One of These Days" from their album 'Meddle'. Unfortunately, I never got to see Floyd live, although I did catch Roger Waters with Nick Mason doing "Dark Side of the Moon" a couple of years back - but if you ever get the chance, "The Australian Pink Floyd" tribute band's live version of this is, dare I say it, better than the original.

Favourite track from a film. O Brother, Where Art Thou? starred George Clooney but thankfully he didn't sing, various artists did, one of which was Alison Krauss - Down In The River To Pray is just pure magic. It gives me goose pimples and makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck each time I hear it.

Favourite albums

Probably quite predictable for somebody of my age, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. I actually have five copies of this - two on vinyl (one white) and three on CD in various enhanced sound qualities. Why is it my favourite? Back in the seventies I wasn't that keen on going to live gigs. For me, the sound of the live band didn't match the studio production of the album (not the same today, of course). Dark Side of the Moon is all about the excellent production. Production is what helped make the Beatles stand out from their contemporaries - George Martin being the 'fifth' Beatle and all that - and Dark Side carried on that tradition.

Favourite books

Lord of the Rings and the Dune. Both series I've read countless times but my all time favourite (to date) is The Dispossessed by Ursula K Le Guin.

Favourite TV and films

I probably watch too much TV. My current favourites are Dexter, Friday Night Lights and Without A Trace. I'll also own up to liking (over my considerable years) to The Lone Ranger, Dr Who, Early Edition and Monk.

Films: the orginal version of Journey To The Centre of The Earth starring Pat Boone and James Mason, plus Blade Runner.

One other thing I love

I find this quite a difficult question to answer - I like watching the TV and listening to music, going to concerts, eating out etc all really bland answers - what I really like are 'unconditional acts of human kindness' - make what you will of that.

One thing I really hate

In no particular order - ignorance, soggy bits of paper, spiders, religion (not to be confused with faith), the Royal Family - I could go on ...
